How We Started Equine Connections
Equine Connections is the culmination of a lifetime interest in horses and love of people for our founder, Erika Adolph. Founded in 2013 after completing certification as an Equine Specialist (ES), Erika began the pursuit to find a mental health professional to partner with and develop a program of helping people through horses. After several starts and stops, Erika returned to school to obtain a mental health license herself, all the while maintaining EAGALA certification through continued training and education.
In 2019, Erika graduated from Liberty University with a Master's Degree in Professional Counseling. Immediately following, Erika and her husband, David, were offered positions at a facility in Minnesota that exclusively practiced mental health counseling using horses. Traveling each week for 2 full days (up to 12 hours each day), they gained vast experience working with a wide variety of mental health clients and disorders. Their daughter, Mikael, joined the team shortly after, gaining vast experience as well. Finally, the decision was made to bring this modality of therapy back to NW Iowa where they have lived since 2002.
